About Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) –
Bengaluru MahanagaraPalike (BBMP): The account of municipal Governance of Bangalore dates back to 27th March 1862. At that time there were only nine leading citizens of the city who formed a Municipal Board under the Improvement of Towns Act of 1850. Later on, a similar Municipal Board was also established in the Cantonment area of the city. These boards were legalized in the year 1881 which functioned as independent bodies called the ‘Bangalore City Municipality’ and the ‘Bangalore Civil’ and ‘Military Station Municipality’.
The following year, the concept of the elected representatives came into existence and also saw the influx of property tax. After the Indian independence, two of the Municipal Boards were merged to form the Corporation of the City of Bangalore in the year 1949, under the Bangalore City Corporation Act. The corporation then consisted of 70 elected representatives and 50 electoral divisions. The name of the council then changed — first to Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) and then to Bangalore MahanagaraPalike (BMP).

Further to this, the council’s name was again changed — first to ‘Bangalore City Corporation’ (BCC) and later to ‘Bangalore MahanagaraPalike’ (BMP).
In January 2007, the Karnataka Government issued an official notification to merge the areas under existing Bangalore MahanagaraPalike with seven City municipal councils (CMC). Town Municipal Council (TMC) and 111 villages around the city formed a single administrative body, Bruhat Bangalore MahanagaraPalike. The whole process was completed by April 2007 and the body was renamed as ‘Bruhat Bengaluru MahanagaraPalike‘ (BBMP).
